A plunger clears many mild blockages. If it doesn't, stop and call us.

You flush, and the water rises instead of going down. Or the shower won't drain and the kitchen sink smells. A blocked toilet or drain is never pleasant, and it's worse when it's the only toilet in the house.

What to do right now

  • Stop flushing. Each flush adds more water and risks an overflow.
  • Stop running taps that drain into the same pipe.
  • Don't pour bleach or drain cleaner into a fully blocked toilet. It can splash back and damage the pipes.
  • Check outside. If you can see a drain cover and it's full, the blockage is further down the pipe. Tell us when you call.

How to clear a blocked toilet yourself

For a mild blockage, a plunger often works. Put the plunger over the hole at the bottom of the bowl, push down gently, then pump firmly ten to fifteen times. If the water starts to drain, flush once to check.

If the toilet is badly blocked, keeps blocking, or the water is rising in other places too, stop and call us. Pushing harder can crack the pan or move the blockage further down.

What we unblock

  • Blocked toilets and overflowing pans
  • Blocked kitchen sinks, baths, showers and basins
  • Slow, gurgling or smelly waste pipes
  • Blocked outside drains and gullies serving your home

How we clear it

We start gently: plungers, augers and drain rods. Once it's clear, we tell you what caused it, whether that's wet wipes, fat, hair or a damaged pipe, and how to stop it happening again.

Shared drains and public sewers are usually the water company's job. If that's where the problem is, we'll tell you and help you report it.

How a callout works

  1. You call. A real person answers and talks you through making it safe.
  2. We dispatch the nearest free engineer and text you their name and arrival time. We aim for 60 minutes, and if traffic or a busy night means longer, we tell you straight away.
  3. The engineer diagnoses the fault and gives you a fixed price before starting.
  4. We fix it, tidy up and email your invoice and photos.

See our callout prices. If you decide not to go ahead after the quote, you pay only the callout.

Common questions

How do I unblock a badly blocked toilet?

Try a plunger first: cover the hole at the bottom of the bowl and pump firmly ten to fifteen times. If that doesn't work, or water is rising elsewhere, stop and call a plumber so you don't crack the pan.

Can you unblock a toilet at night?

Yes. Our plumbers work 24 hours a day. If it's your only toilet, tell us when you call and we'll prioritise it.

What causes most blocked toilets?

Wet wipes are the most common cause, even ones labelled flushable. Too much toilet paper, sanitary products and children's toys come next.

Who pays for a blocked drain?

You're usually responsible for drains that only serve your home and sit inside your boundary. Shared drains and public sewers are normally the water company's responsibility.

How much does drain unblocking cost?

We charge our standard callout, which includes the first hour. Most blockages are cleared within it. See our prices.
