No water or low water pressure?

You turn on the tap and get a trickle, or nothing at all. These quick checks tell you whether it's your plumbing or the water supply.

Kitchen tap running with very low water pressure
A weak trickle can mean a closed valve, a leak or a supply problem.

It's the morning rush. The shower barely dribbles, the kitchen tap splutters, and the kettle takes a minute to fill. Or there's simply no water at all.

Before you call anyone, take two minutes to work out where the problem is.

Quick checks

  1. Ask a neighbour. If they have no water either, it's the water supply, not your home. Check your water company's website for problems in your area.
  2. Check your stopcock is fully open. Turn it anticlockwise as far as it goes.
  3. Is it hot water, cold water, or both? If only the hot water is affected, see our no hot water guide.
  4. Is it freezing outside? A frozen pipe can stop your water completely. Never use a naked flame to thaw it.

Common causes of low water pressure at home

  • A stopcock or valve that's partly closed or failing
  • A leak somewhere, sometimes hidden under the floor
  • An empty or faulty cold water tank in the loft
  • Blocked tap aerators or shower heads, often from limescale
  • Old, narrow or corroded supply pipes

If low water pressure has come on suddenly, a leak is worth ruling out. Check for damp patches, a running meter or the sound of water when everything is off.

How we help

Our plumber tests the pressure and flow coming into your home. Then we check your valves, tank and pipework to find where the problem starts. We fix what we can there and then. If the fault is on the water company's side, we tell you and give you the readings to report it.

How a callout works

  1. You call. A real person answers and talks you through making it safe.
  2. We dispatch the nearest free engineer and text you their name and arrival time. We aim for 60 minutes, and if traffic or a busy night means longer, we tell you straight away.
  3. The engineer diagnoses the fault and gives you a fixed price before starting.
  4. We fix it, tidy up and email your invoice and photos.

See our callout prices. If you decide not to go ahead after the quote, you pay only the callout.

Common questions

Why do I suddenly have no water?

The most common causes are a water supply problem in your area, a closed or broken stopcock, a frozen pipe or a big leak. If your neighbours have water and you don't, the problem is probably in your home.

Who do I call if the whole street has no water?

Call your water company, because the problem is on their network. In most of London that's Thames Water.

Why is my water pressure low?

Common causes are a partly closed stopcock, blocked shower heads or taps, a leak, a faulty loft tank, or old narrow pipes. If it happened suddenly, check for leaks first.

Can low water pressure be fixed?

Usually, yes. We find the cause first, then fix it or explain the best option.

Areas we cover

We cover central London (Westminster, the City, Kensington and Chelsea) and west London (Hammersmith, Fulham, Chiswick, Acton and Ealing).
